Your wedding day is the happiest day of your life thus far, the beginning of your journey together as partners, the magical graduation of a relationship to marriage, but it can also be one of the most expensive days of your life. Adding the costs of the venue, catering, flowers, wedding dress, decorations, and more can become overwhelming. The average cost of a wedding in Georgia can be anywhere from 15 thousand to 30 thousand dollars and beyond. If you’re like me and the clearance section is your favorite shopping destination, the thought of your wedding costing THAT much can be daunting. Don’t let it be! With these simple and beautiful “Do It Yourself” (DIY) projects, your wedding day can be everything you ever dreamed it could be at a fraction of the price.

Table Centerpieces

Creating your own centerpieces is the perfect item to start with on your DIY wedding journey. Some venues offer table decor as a part of your wedding package, however, this can be pricey. Making your own can save you some cash and also give you total creative freedom over your unique vision. For starters, make sure you know what type of wedding you’re having — traditional, rustic, quirky — then create your centerpiece around that theme. For the rustic bride, you might consider doing a wood base with burlap elements or filling mason jars with flowers to catch your guests’ attention and perfectly capture your vision. If you’re the traditional type and want a more elegant centerpiece, consider floating candle vases. This can be done by placing a floating candle in a tall, glass vase filled with water. For a little more sparkle, add a band of glitter ribbon around the bottom or top of the vase and add as many as you want to each table (I would recommend three different vases standing at three different heights). Whichever theme you and your spouse decide on, all the supplies can be purchased at the Hobby Lobby on Parkway Blvd in Athens, GA.

Invitations and Save the Dates

Designing and making your own save the dates and wedding invitations are  another great DIY project for the cost-savvy bride, and it’s easier than you think. Start with buying white card stock in bulk, and make sure you have enough (and extras in case you mess up) for everyone you plan to invite. If you want to add a little more personality to your plain white card stock, use watercolors to create a whimsical splash of your favorite colors. Next, open your computer and get to designing! Microsoft Publisher offers templates to make this design process easier. If you can’t find a font you like, you can download one from the internet and upload it to Publisher. Don’t have Microsoft Publisher? Don’t worry! You can still easily accomplish your ideal invitations in Microsoft Word. For your Save the Dates, consider this same technique, but with a few changes. Cut the card stock into smaller circles and print your design on them. Then, cut them out and place a magnet strip on the back of the circle to create your personalized refrigerator magnet. This DIY project saves you tons and really gets your creative juices flowing.

Build Your Own Bouquet

If ordering your flowers from a florist is just too expensive, another great DIY project is building your own bouquets. Purchasing your flowers in bulk is the best way to start this process, and Sam’s Club on Atlanta Highway near Athens, GA has got you covered! Plan to get together a day or two before your wedding for a bridesmaids luncheon, pick up your food from Martis at Midday and build your bouquets with your bridesmaids. While this is a cost-efficient alternative, it is also a great way to bond with your wedding party and create your ideal bouquets. To take it even further, have an empty vase on each reception table where your bridesmaids can place their unique, hand-made bouquets after the ceremony. Now, building your own bouquet is a worthwhile two-in-one DIY project.

Bridesmaid Gifts

What better way to thank your bridesmaids than giving them a gift? Save money with personalized DIY presents. For your favorite girls, consider making personalized wine glasses or water bottles. While you’re browsing the aisles of Hobby Lobby for your favorite cups, pick up vinyl lettering and customize each glass or bottle with the initial of your bridesmaids. Enjoy mimosas on your wedding day with your affordable yet adorable bridesmaids gifts. If you’re looking for something a little more meaningful, write each of your bridesmaids a letter to be read on your wedding day. You can also accompany this letter with a framed picture of you and each girl. This is a sincere gift that any bridesmaid would be lucky to receive and will be able to cherish forever.

The list does not stop here. There are so many other DIY projects you can do: Wooden signs, ceremony arches, customizable dessert displays, and the list goes on and on. Some projects may seem a little overwhelming at first, but they are a great way to save money and properly execute your perfect wedding vision. No matter what DIY projects you choose, they’re sure to be unique and special to your wedding day.
