If you’re like me, then you absolutely never know what to wear to a wedding. What is appropriate can vary depending on how formal the wedding is or what season it is. Here is a quick guide to what you should wear depending on when you’ll be attending someone else’s big day.

Winter

A lot of winter weddings tend to be a little more formal, which means that you might have to break out some nicer clothes. Navy, black, and grey are always great options that you can easily dress up very nicely with some jewelry or a pair of heels. You’ll want to wear layers, either with a scarf, smock, or coat; the wedding probably will not be outside, but these layers will keep you warm while walking in and out of the ceremony and reception venues. Men will definitely want to wear nice pants and a button-down with a blazer. It also might be a good idea to consider wearing a tie depending on just how formal the wedding is.

Spring

Spring weddings can be some of the most beautiful as the weather is starting to warm up and the flowers begin to bloom. However, the temperature is always uncertain and you should probably expect rain. A sundress in a lighter color is always a great option. You can also opt for a floral dress or skirt if you are wanting to really embrace the fun colors that come along with spring. However, if you choose florals or any other pattern, you will want to keep your accessories simple in order to avoid looking too busy. You can pair any of your options with a pair of wedges or even some flats. Khaki pants paired with a brighter colored button down are perfect for guys.

Summer

If you get invited to a summer wedding there is a high chance that it will be outdoors, which means you are going to want to keep all of your options pretty light. Linen is a great summer option that will not be too hot and looks very nice. Sundresses are always great, and you probably have a few of these in your closet anyway. Wedges or espadrilles are a pretty comfortable option that will make your outfit look nicer. You can also wear a lot of fun jewelry in the summer to add pops of color. However, one thing to keep in mind during the summer months is to steer clear of wearing white. While white is a beautiful option for the warmer months, you want to avoid wearing the same color as the bride out of respect for her and her day. For guys, dressing for summer weddings tends to be pretty simple. Khaki pants and a button-down shirt should do the trick.

Fall

Fall weddings in the South can be one of the trickiest things to plan an outfit for. Sometimes the weather is great, sometimes it is sweltering hot and others it is freezing cold. Layers are probably your best move for a wedding in the fall. A nicer dress with either a scarf or a sweater will not only look great but also keep you just the right temperature. For men, depending on the weather that day, you can go with nicer pants and either a polo or a button down. A jacket might be a nice accessory to bring along because again, fall in the South is unpredictable.
