The BEST part of weddings (besides, you know, marrying the love of your life) is the gorgeous photos that capture the day. These are the photos that you are going to look back on ten years down the road and show your kids while explaining how amazing your wedding day was. Needless to say, you want these photos to be beautiful. In order to get the best photos possible, it’s important you choose an amazing photographer who is skilled in their field. There’s a lot that goes into picking someone to take incredible engagement and wedding photos, so here are a few tips to help you pick the perfect photographer.

Photo Style

Photography is art and every photographer has his or her own unique vision for their masterpieces. First thing’s first, you want to establish the photo style you want. Do you want high-end, editorial glamor shots? Do you want your photographer to help pose you often? Or do you want a photojournalistic style, with lots of candid, genuine shots and minimal interference from the photographer? These questions are important in helping you understand what types of photos you are looking for. You should also consider the aesthetic qualities of the photos, like the color tones. They can range from bright, natural light shots with soft pastel colors, to dark shots with dramatic colors. Once you understand the aesthetic qualities you’re looking for in your photos, choosing a great photographer becomes a lot easier.

Connections

Next, talk to your married friends and see if they have any tips for choosing a photographer in your area. They’ll not only be able to give you recommendations, but also give insight to what they found to be the most important things to consider while looking for a photographer. You should also look up photographers in an online, local directory. You will be exposed to a wide variety of potential clients and that will give you a good starting point in the deciding process.

Instagram Stalking

In the least creepy way possible, online stalking is the best way to get a feel for a photographer and their body of work. Look through their Instagram and online portfolios to see if their photo and editing style aligns with what you are looking for. Follow them on Instagram, friend them on Facebook, even look through the photos that they are tagged in to see a larger collection of their work. Another tip is to make sure the photographer you’re considering has their own website with a portfolio. If they only have a Facebook page to showcase their work, they may not be a  professional or very experienced.

A Good Relationship is Key

After you choose a few photographers who fit into your overall vision, you should start reaching out to them and getting to know them. Schedule a time to meet up, discuss photo options, and see if you click with them. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day, so you want to feel completely comfortable and confident with them. Creating a good connection can also help the photographer capture more personal details, creating not just good photos, but a visual story of your love.

Whole Visuals

One of the most important things you can do when deciding on your photographer is ask to see a complete wedding album. Look through all the shots they took and see if it’s everything you expect to have shot at your wedding. Did they capture the floral arrangements? The guests dancing? The grand exit? You should also pick certain shots you can’t live without, and tell your photographer about them to ensure that they are a priority on the photo list. But don’t get too bogged-down in capturing every aspect of the wedding. Pick a few shots you want, and let the photographer do the rest. Remember, they are the expert, and you chose them for a reason.

Photo Proofs and Packages

There are a lot of technical things that can be confusing when looking for the right photographer. You should always ask about pricing and packages to see what deals they offer, ask about their general “shooting fees” and see what rates they go for. You should also ask about the photos you’ll receive, how long the post-production process will take, and if you’ll get both the edited and unedited files. This way, you’ll get a more comprehensive understanding of what you’re paying for, and when you should receive the shots. It’s also incredibly important to ask about the rights of the photos. Some photographers own the rights to photos, so you’d have to credit them in some way when you post a photo. You want to make sure that you own or can buy the rights to your photos.
