Pictures are one of the only things from your wedding that will last forever. With that in mind, you want to make sure that you are getting everything you want and need in a wedding photographer. Here are some great questions that you may consider asking your potential wedding photographer(s) for your Athens wedding!
It is best to set up an interview to get to know your future photographer, see some examples of weddings they’ve shot, get a sense of their shooting style, and discuss any other matters.
Additionally, remember that your wedding photographer is the only person you’ve hired to be there from the time to begin getting ready, until you drive off for your honeymoon. Requesting this information is very important to help everyone feel comfortable throughout the day, and it keeps things running smoothly since you’ve already cleared any questions or concerns!
- Why are you worth the amount you charge?
Wedding photographers can be very personal with the work they do, and they love getting the chance to explain why their work at your wedding should be valued.
- What is your preferred style of photography?
Traditional, Artistic, Natural Light, Photojournalistic, Illustrative…
- How many weddings will you be shooting on my wedding day?
If more than one, ensure that there is plenty of time in between each one.
- Have you ever shot at my venue?
If they haven’t, ask if they would be willing to do a site visit.
- Do you bring your own lighting?
The answer should be yes! If it isn’t, expect an answer as to why they work without their own lighting.
- Do you work from a shot list?
If they do, ask to see this list. If they don’t, follow up by asking if you can provide your own specific shot list.
- Can I request certain images to be taken at my wedding?
If yes, ask how they will ensure to capture these images.
- How do you make us feel relaxed in front of the camera?
Some photographers would recommend you choosing them for your engagement session to help you get to know them and feel comfortable before the big day.
- How many hours are included in your package?
Typical wedding photography needs to start at least two hours before the ceremony.
- How much does an additional hour of coverage cost?
- Will you help me with the time line of my wedding day?
Photographers are very helpful when it comes to sticking to the schedule. Chances are, they know the best times of the day to shoot outside, and they know how long it takes for the pictures you’ve planned.
- Do you bring a second shooter?
Some photographers do not let the bride walk down the aisle without a second shooter, at least for the ceremony. There are many missed moments (groom’s expression, bride’s expression, parents’ expression) because there is only one photographer.
- How many images can I expect to see from my wedding?
On average, photographers take between 1,200 and 1,500 images at your wedding, but that doesn’t mean that you will see all of those! Typically, brides see anywhere from 150 to 400 images from their wedding.
- Do you have a limit to the amount of images you will edit?
The answer should be “no.”
- How long does it take to see the proofs from my wedding?
- Do I receive a disc of images, or do I have to order all prints through you?
- How much are prints?
- Is an album included?
If so, ask to see a sample album from a complete wedding. Also, ask to see an album of a wedding that is in a similar setting as your wedding (outside, church, beach).
- Will you use my images in any advertising?
- What is your plan if you are ill or an emergency comes up and you can’t photograph my wedding?
- How much is the deposit?
- When is the balance due?
- What is your cancellation policy?
- How many weddings have you shot?
The more experience they have then the better they are able to deal with any situation at your wedding, such as low light at the reception or a camera that stops working.
- Do you have any type of liability insurance in case something happens to your equipment?
The answer should be YES on this one. In fact, most venues require the photographer to have insurance to cover any accidents that might happen.
- What do you do to stay updated on current new trends and ideas in wedding photography?
Even the best wedding photographers should be attending seminars and workshops to stay current on wedding photography.
When it comes to Athens, Georgia wedding photographers, there is one name that you hear over and over: Blane Marable Photography. When I asked Blane what sets him apart from other wedding photographers in the Athens area, this is what he had to say:
“I take pride in getting to know the bride and groom as well as their families. I know family and friends are important and I concentrate on capturing many images of parents, grandparents as well as other close relatives. When it comes to the formal photos after the ceremony, my experience allows me to pose everyone to look their best and do it quickly. In most cases I can be finished with the formal family photos in less than 30 minutes so everyone can get to the reception. Even with my experience, I never stop learning. I am a member of both the Professional Photographers Of America and the Georgia Professional Photographs of America. I am also a member of the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International and I attend several workshops each year on wedding photography to stay update and current on how to capture the new trends in wedding photography as well as the timeless traditional ones.”
