The Classic City is not lacking in hot spots to say, “I do.” From UGA’s iconic Chapel to The Graduate Hotel’s plethora of options, Athens has seen it all. One Athens venue we don’t see as often however, may be one of the city’s best kept secret. Off Prince Avenue, just past the country club sits this magical secret: a secluded enclave, gracefully aged and perfect for a wedding experience like no other.

The Hill is a collection of historic homes from across the South East, restored, and arranged in the sleepy shadows of the trees that surround it. The estate, named for the elevation at which it sits, is the brainchild of Lee Epting, a local citizen passionate about historic preservation. In 1979 Epting purchased and moved a 18th century home from Donalds, South Carolina to its present location. Today the fully restored Donalds-Epting House serves as the Epting family’s private residence, and the centerpiece of the surrounding estate. During the house’s restoration it was merged with a 19th century home originally in downtown Athens, giving the modern house a mixed history.

Another staple of the The Hill is the Hodgson Lumpkin House, one of the oldest houses in Athens. More commonly known as the A+D House, the home was originally built right outside downtown on Oconee Street in 1801. In 2001 Epting moved and restored the dilapidated house, adding to his growing collection. Today, the two story home is fit for rental and would make the perfect wedding party headquarters.

Other buildings found on the property include the Quinn and Rock Houses, both native to the lot when Epting purchased it. Rock House was built in 1920 by the grandson of a former slave who was deeded the land after the Civil War. The original owner used stones found when plowing nearby fields to build it, giving the quaint house its nickname.

Outside of the historic buildings, beautifully landscaped and curated grounds provide numerous options for a perfect outdoor ceremony or reception. The brick walled garden makes the dream spot for an intimate ceremony, sequestered by the surrounding forest. If the garden looks familiar, it might be because it, along with the rest of the estate, was the setting for the 2009 rom-com, Not Since You.

Shady groves under arching live oaks or a rustic barn could make the perfect spot for a laid back reception. Allow your guests to explore the property and enjoy stumbling upon the random bits of history they may find, such as the three seated outhouse said to have been used by General Sherman on a stop along his Civil War march to Savannah. The amount of open outdoor space makes The Hill a perfect place for spring and fall weddings, summer too if you can take the heat!

With its depth of history, secluded setting, and array of options The Hill offers a unique experience for initiating matrimony. More information on the estate and booking it can be found at Epting Events, the event planning company owned by Epting.
