What’s the one thing we love here in Athens more than weddings? It’s football of course! Down south we’re all about tailgates and touchdowns. The only problem is that Saturdays are also the most popular day of the week to have your wedding. Well, what if I told you that you could have the best of both worlds without having to give up either one? That’s right, the newest, most exciting trend right now is having a tailgate wedding! So, let’s get down, set, and ready to run through this blog post to find out more about this wedding trend score!

Recently, at the Georgia vs Tennessee game right here in Athens, we witnessed our first tailgate wedding in action! Michael and April are a house divided when it comes to football, but on Saturday, September 29th, they brought their rivalry to a pause for their wedding outside of Sanford Stadium. Their wedding took place during the Georgia vs. Tennessee game and it brought orange and red together in a beautiful way!

Michael and April’s ceremony took place under a Tennessee tailgate tent. There was a total of 80 guests who divided themselves among Georgia chairs on the right and Tennessee chairs on the left. The bride wore a beautiful black dress and a red belt with some red heels and earrings that really made the outfit pop! The groom wore an orange button down accented with his Tennessee “T” and finished off the look with khaki pants. To top off their tailgate wedding they greeted their friends and family with a sign that read “all you need is love and football” which reads very true for all of us here in the south.

When I talked to April about the inspiration of her tailgate wedding, she explained that the moment her and Michael realized that all of their parties revolve around football, there was no doubt in their minds that they should have a tailgate wedding. They were already planning to tailgate during the Georgia vs. Tennessee game and they wanted the good vibes of game days to be shown throughout their wedding day. As she said, “Everyone knows the atmosphere of an SEC tailgate can’t be replicated!

Of course I also had to ask her, being a traditional girl myself, if this wedding was everything she had ever dreamed it would be. Her answer was that it was absolutely perfect! So many of their friends and family were willing to join them and cheer on their teams during the game. It really made them appreciative of what they have. There was even an added bonus of bringing people to their first tailgate experience ever, and it doesn’t get much better than that!

Tailgate themed weddings are also on the rise with people getting all of their favorite decorations in their team colors and watching the game during the reception. With your tailgate weddings you have have a football field cake, personalized koozies saying “ready, set, I do” and even some football themed party games! There’s so much to personalize from party favors to invitations to all the decorations that if you’re a serious football fan, this could be a perfect way to showcase your creativity along with your love of the sport!
