You’ve been by her side through the ups and downs in life, and now you’re going to be by her side as she says “I Do”. But what exactly do you do? Being chosen as a bridesmaid or the maid of honor is a truly special moment, and understanding your duties is important. First things first: say yes! After you accept your role as bridesmaid or maid of honor, block the time off on your schedule. If a date hasn’t been chosen yet, reassure the bride that no matter what, you’ll be there. Now comes the fun part! Follow these tips to ensure you’re the best bridesmaid you can be.

The Dresses

The foremost accessory for any bride is, of course, the wedding dress. The bride has been dreaming about wearing this dress for as long as she can remember. As Maid of Honor, your duty is to help her find her dream dress. Narrow down the perfect date and time to venture to David’s Bridal, or I Do I Do Bridal Center located in Athens, GA, and make sure it works for everyone she wants to bring. During her appointment, make her feel comfortable and beautiful, and make sure to give her your honest opinions. That way, you can help her find her perfect dress with the least stress.

Once the wedding dress is chosen, and the bride and groom have picked their wedding venue and colors, it’s time to get the bridesmaids dresses. As a member of the bridal party, it is your duty to buy your bridesmaid dress and shoes. While some brides do purchase the dresses for the bridesmaids, this is unlikely. If they do help, it is more likely that they may pay for a portion of your dress. However, don’t fret! You’ll have enough time between picking the dress and the wedding day to save up some cash. After you’ve purchased the dress, make sure it is hemmed to perfection to avoid tripping down the aisle, a nightmare for you and the bride.

The Parties

With a proposal comes many different ways of celebrating the couple-to-be. The first of these celebrations is the engagement party. This specific get-together involved both the bride and groom and is typically planned after the proposal. Following the engagement party is the bridal shower, and, of course, the bachelorette party. As Maid of Honor, you will help plan all of these parties and make sure they’re tailormade to the bride’s tastes. For the bridal shower, it is important to create the perfect guest list. Include everyone that is anyone special to the bride. If you get stumped with the guest list, don’t be afraid to ask the other bridesmaids and the mother of the bride. Once the guest list is set and the invitations are sent out, place your catering order from Martis at Midday, and don’t forget to plan fun games for the guests to enjoy.

Then there’s the bachelorette party: the last bash before the bride says those two special words. This is an all-hands-on-deck festivity and is sure to be the most fun. The bridesmaids and maid of honor must put their heads together and throw the bride an unforgettable weekend. Of all the duties, planning the bachelorette party is arguably the most exciting. Pick the best location with the most enjoyable activities that is everything the bride dreamed it to be.

While it is not your duty to plan the rehearsal dinner, it is your duty to show up to it, and to all the parties before it. The most important task regarding parties for a bridesmaid or maid of honor is showing up and having a good time. The bride chose you to be in her bridal party for a reason, so ensure you are available and ready to celebrate her!

The Wedding Day

After months and months of preparation, the day you’ve all been waiting for is finally here: the wedding day. This is the day that you will execute the bulk of your duties as the bridal party. The first and most important obligation of the big day is getting ready with the bride. This involves getting your hair and makeup done and slipping on that perfectly tailored dress. Once the bridal party is ready, it’s time to jet off to pictures.

During the ceremony, the maid of honor has a few last jobs to make the “I Do’s” run smoothly. As soon as the bridal party makes their way down the aisle and lines up along the front of the ceremony, the blushing bride waltzes down the aisle to stand between you and her husband-to-be. The maid of honor is responsible for holding the bride’s bouquet while she says her vows. It’s also important for the maid of honor to fix the train where it lies flawlessly behind the silhouette for a seamless look and perfect photos. After the ceremony, comes the reception. The last task as a member of the bridal party is dancing! No reception is complete without a line dance or two, so get the party started and lead the rest of the guests in the cupid shuffle or the electric slide!

Though there are many duties for the bridal party, the most important thing to remember is to never leave the bride’s side. With all the stress of wedding planning, it’s good for her to know she can rely on her bridal party to be there to pick her up when she’s down and to help her celebrate this special time in her life. Make sure her stress is alleviated and always be there for her. Be present, show up on time, plan ahead and always get your dress hemmed.
