It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the perfect season to celebrate the happiest day of your life. The entire holiday season creates an effortlessly romantic atmosphere for your wedding day and Athens, Georgia is the perfect Southern town for your holiday wedding.
People tend to shy away from having their weddings over the holidays due to the hustle and bustle of the season, but it can be the perfect time to get all of your family and friends together. Many people have days off from work and school during this time of year; however, it is vital to send out save-the-date notices far enough in advance for your guests to mark their calendars.
I spoke with future bride Ann Glasgow about her upcoming wedding this December and she said, “My fiancé and I chose to get married in early December as the holiday season is just getting started. Since people are already in a festive and celebratory mood for that time of year, it seemed like the perfect atmosphere for a wedding.” Christmas brings a sense of togetherness and everyone will look forward to celebrating your marriage along with the season.

When it comes to decorating for your ceremony, most venues will have a lot of the work already done for you. If you’re planning on a church ceremony, this is the perfect time of year. Ann, who is choosing a church wedding, noted, “An added bonus for a wedding in December is being able to make use of the Christmas decor already set up at the church and reception venue.” Most churches already have greenery and trees all around. Not only does this save you work but also money.
To make sure the decor will match your style, have the venue show you examples of their past decor. Most will be decorated from Thanksgiving to New Year’s which gives you a large window to plan your big day. Athens venues, such as the Taylor Grady House and The Classic Center, will have beautiful decorations already on display; yet, you will still have the opportunity to add personal touches to make the experience your own.
Athens is beautiful throughout the holidays. Downtown transforms into a winter wonderland with lights lining the streets making it perfect for nighttime photos. Since Georgia has mild winters, it’s the perfect place to have your Christmas wedding.
As Ann said, “Being in the South and avoiding the heat of summer and early fall was a big plus in setting a December wedding.”
