With over 300 species of various plant material, the Garden practically takes care of your floral arrangements for you. In 1891, twelve ladies gathered together to form the first chapter of the Garden Club of America, right here in Athens, GA.
In 1936, the Garden Club of Georgia created the nationally acclaimed garden as a memorial to the twelve founders of the Ladies Garden Club of Athens, as well as a commemoration to those who have served in the US Armed Forces during World War II. The founder and dean of the UGA landscape and architecture program, Hubert Bond Owens, designed and developed the garden, completing the project in 1946.
The historic red-brick Greek Revival house on the grounds, known as the Lumpkin House, also contributes to the rich history intertwined in the Garden; the house has been used as a dining hall and residence hall for the university, the home of the first Dean of Women in the 1920s, as well as the first on-campus sorority house at the university.
Today the garden historic buildings are maintained by the UGA College of Environment and Design, where the garden is used as a teaching resource and display of landscape design, as well as a public garden for all who visit Athens. The 2.5 acres of carefully structured landscaping include a boxwood garden, two courtyards, an arboretum, a retrace and a perennial garden.

While the Garden is home to such a rich and preserved history, it is still a living garden that is widely used and appreciated today. The Garden does ask that guests respect the historic nature of the grounds, plants and buildings, but it can still accommodate up to 150 guests for a tranquil outdoor wedding surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle sound of the garden’s trickling fountain.
The garden is also ideal to capture picture-perfect moments, like the engagement photo above. With dozens of picturesque locations for photos in the Garden, you will not be disappointed with the location of your wedding photos.
