Your wedding invitation is a crucial part of your wedding because it conveys important information to your guests about your wedding. It should be sent about three to four months before your ceremony. For the most part, invitations follow a set of general guidelines. There are many unspoken rules for the information that should and should not be included on the invitation.

Your wedding invitation should be sent after your save the dates. The save the date cards should be sent about six months before the wedding and include important information such as the wedding website or registry. Invitations are typically sent out six to eight weeks before the wedding with more information, such as the time and venue of the wedding.

Your wedding invitation layout should be clean and simple only including the necessary information. Fancy fonts should be used scarcely and is typically only used for the names of the bride and groom. If you use a font that has a lot of detail and personality, it could lower the readability of the invitation and your guests could be potentially missing important information. Furthermore, centering the text conveys a sense of elegance and importance of the message. The other details pertaining to design included in the message are up to your interpretation and can be your chance to add some creativity and personality to the invitation

Beyond the typical information, such as the name of the bride and groom, date, and location of the wedding, there are a few other pieces of information that should be featured on the invitation. First, the RSVP deadline date should be clearly stated on the invitation so guests know when they need to send their RSVP card in by. The typical deadline to RSVP by is two to three weeks before the wedding. Additionally, the dress code can be included here so you can set your guests’ expectations for how formal they should dress. Phrases to indicate the dress code are “black tie,” “cocktail attire.” or “casual attire.” All of these phrases will be acceptable in setting your guests’ expectations.

There is a whole list of information that should not be included on your wedding invitation. The invitation is meant to be something simple with the most important details of your wedding day featured. The other, less important details, can be conveyed to your guests in different ways. The two largest items that should not be included on your invitation is a link to your wedding registry or the wedding website. Much of this information is better suited for the save the date. It could give your guests the wrong impression if you include this information on the invitation itself.

Wedding invitations are meant to convey the basic and most important information about your wedding. It should not be used as an opportunity to ask for wedding gifts or to share detailed information. They are simply a means to invite your close friends and loved ones to set aside time in their busy schedules to spend with you on an important day.
